Sports

At St James, there's plenty of sport for everyone who wants to get involved. Activities run before school, at lunch times and during afternoons after school on both a recreational and competitive basis. We have a very active Sports Department and much more going on than most schools of our size. You can download our current extra-curricular schedule here

The department regularly enters both local and national competitions in football, basketball, netball, rounders, cricket and athletics.  We have strengthened our links with the local clubs in Dudley and beyond and now offer additional satellite clubs in basketball and boxing on a weekly basis. St James Academy learners can come and participate on a regular basis and receive specialist coaching.  Several learners have gone on to participate at club, area, county and in some cases national level.  As well as our own playing fields, we have access to the fantastic 3G pitch at Dudley College and have football training held weekly by specialist staff on this superb facility.

DAT Sports:
We are very fortunate to work closely with our fellow Dudley Academy Trust schools and this has resulted in many additional opportunities such as Year 7 Football tournaments, Year 7-9 Tag Rugby tournaments, mixed age/gender basketball matches and of course our DAT Sports day which is held at the Dell Stadium.

Annual Sports Day
By far the biggest event in our sporting calendar is our annual Sports Day in which all of Year 7 to 10 participate.

Each tutor group is placed into a team identified by a colour - teams are made up fairly with learners of mixed sporting abilities from a range of year groups.

Our 2024 Sports Day is scheduled for July and communication will be made to parents/carers nearer the time to confirm the final date of the event - may the best team win!

Leadership Opportunities:
Learners are given the opportunity to engage in a number of roles within sport, not just as a performer. We now have a very strong team of Sports Captains at the school, mainly from Key Stage 4. These Sports Captains give up their time to coach, officiate and organise sports clubs lower down in the school. While doing this, they are gaining excellent opportunities to develop their leadership skills. Sports Captains are selected on the basis they are an excellent role model for St James Academy.
