Drama

The Performing Arts department is housed in a purpose-built studio space, equipped with advanced music systems, stage lighting and mirrored walls. Our vibrant and dynamic department involves learners from throughout the academy in this interesting and challenging subject which increases confidence and speaking skills.

Drama is a subject for young people who have initiative and energy, who want to get involved and are interested in how thoughts and emotions can be expressed through expression, action and body language. It also involves thinking about how to stage dramatic pieces so that audiences can feel part of the drama they are watching.

The Edexcel GCSE is assessed through a combination of a 40% written exam and 60% Non-Examined Assessment (NEA). Students study one complete and substantial performance text and two key extracts from a second contrasting performance text. The texts are studied to gain a practical understanding of drama. Students participate in a minimum of two full performances, one devised by themselves.

The full GCSE specification may be found here.

Outside of the Classroom
The Performing Arts department runs regular activities that include theatre visits, activity weekends and tours abroad. These give students the opportunity to develop their knowledge outside of the classroom in a variety of exciting and stimulating ways, broadening their learning of the Performing Arts Industry and a performer's world.

We are very proud of the performances put on by our learners over the years; we have an enthusiastic and active department that sets high standards and encourages participation by all.
