Citizenship is a statutory National Curriculum subject; it "gives pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels. It helps them to become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and rights. It promotes their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, making them more self-confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom. It encourages pupils to play a helpful part in the life of their schools, neighbourhoods, communities and the wider world. It also teaches them about our economy and democratic institutions and values; encourages respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities; and develops pupils' ability to reflect on issues and take part in discussions.

PSHEE brings together personal, social and health education, work-related learning, careers, enterprise, and financial capability in non-statutory programmes of study at key stages 3 and 4. Sex and relationships education is taught through a series of lessons throughout the 5 years. The Curriculum is covered sensitively using teaching resources produced in conjunction with NHS schools programme.

At Castle High School, our PHSEE lessons are reinforced by a cross-curricular approach, which means that the programmes of study are embedded across the curriculum in all subject areas. The students are given opportunities to study, reflect upon and discuss topical political, moral, social and cultural issues; they learn to identify the role of the legal, political and economic systems that operate locally and nationally; and they take part in both school and community based activities.

A variety of teaching and learning styles are used in the delivery of the programme. Examples of topics and approaches are : Crime and Punishment - a year 8 scheme which looks at the criminal justice system in the UK, complete with a mock-trial and 'Castle Cluedo'; Democracy - a year 10 scheme which teaches the students about the electoral system and then requires them to take part in their own 'elections'; and The Prom - a year 11 scheme in which form groups compete against each other to plan their end of year Prom from the theme and venue to the catering and entertainment.

PSHEE and Citizenship are reinforced through Tutor time activities, and students are given opportunities to become 'active citizens' by representing the school on a local or national level in sport, music and the arts; helping out on parents evenings or performing arts evenings; taking part in charitable fundraising activities and in local community projects.
